LA ESCUELA___ extends the dealine for submitting proposals to develop artistic educational projects and editorial content on arts and education until July 2, 2023.

LA ESCUELA___ invites artists, architects, scholars, educators, collectives, and community organizations to collaborate in the creation of artistic projects and research texts that link art and education in Latin America. The platform announces a call for proposals centered on collective learning and making in the public space, with an emphasis on peripheral initiatives and underrepresented narratives. This includes projects for online co-creation LABORATORIES, projects for the teaching artists' RESIDENCY, hosts for the production of CLASSROOMS in public space, interview proposals for the virtual AUDITORIUM, and research-based texts for the LIBRARY.

In addition, the call is open for submitting articles and initiatives for building a Hydrocommons Map in its upcoming new biannual academic publication EL JOURNAL, which intends to disseminate artistic research on art and education through academic circuits. Articles and project submissions for this publication is open until July 30, 2023.

LA ESCUELA___ welcomes submissions from individual artists, authors, or collectives—of all nationalities and places of residence—in the fields of visual arts, architecture, performing arts, and social practices. The proposals should address education from artistic, transdisciplinary, and collaborative methodologies, and contribute significantly to the platform’s research archive, formative projects, or interweaving regional bonds. We recommended browsing the Campus contents to become acquainted with our collaborative works and programs.

Proposals from different topics related to the practices and research experience of the applicants are welcome, as long as they are conceived from the crossings of art and education. They should address pressing social, political, or environmental challenges regarding the historical tradition and contemporary Latin American production, prioritizing applicants and approaches coming from historically marginalized communities. LA ESCUELA___ encourages people who identify as an underrepresented community (native peoples, black and mestizo communities, gender diversities, etc.) and/or who contribute to the study of authors, issues, and practices framed within these contexts to apply. The submissions for the academic publication EL JOURNAL should be focused on the theme of its first issue, "Hydrocommons Cultures: Art, Education, and Liquid Ecologies." Proposals for full articles and initiatives developed in Latin America for building a Hydrocommons Map will be received.

The call is open from May 1 through July 2, 2023. 10 contributions will be selected for the Library (written in Spanish, English, or Portuguese), 3 projects for Laboratories, 1 project for the Residency, 1 host for a Classroom, and 5 proposals for the Auditorium. 9 articles will be chosen for El Journal from the applications received until July 30, 2023. This selection will be part of the programs for the 2023—II and 2024—I semesters.

Articles for the LIBRARY:

The LIBRARY is a space organized around the intersections of art and education. It gathers artistic and pedagogical resources produced by LA ESCUELA___ in collaboration with diverse researchers, artists, and educators to connect knowledge and experiences across Latin America. On this occasion, we are looking for articles for the ESSAYS and MAPPINGS sections.

The ESSAYS are reflective and research texts on the thinking and methodologies of fundamental authors for the relations between art and education at different points in history and geographical areas. They also include original hypotheses and current reflections on the interface between art and education. For their part, the MAPPINGS consist of individual research texts that trace artistic educational projects and experiences, articulating genealogies, transits, and interests connected by a common macrohistorical context from specific fields of action and micro-geopolitics. We recommend navigating the LIBRARY to learn more about the nature, scope, and approaches proposed in these sections.

Applicant profile: researchers, curators, educators, artists, scholars, editors, and/or cultural managers with experience in the development of research texts and in the field of arts and education in Latin America.

Find the details and submit your ESSAY proposal here.

Contributions for EL JOURNAL:

EL JOURNAL is an academic publication in the making edited by LA ESCUELA___, dedicated to investigating various current Latin American issues from the perspective of art and education. The first issue is entitled "Hydrocommons Cultures: Art, Education, and Liquid Ecologies" and features Dr. Lisa Blackmore as guest editor. Applications for full ARTICLES will be considered. Seeking to cultivate grounds for regional collaborations, the publication will also receive contributions for building a HYDROCOMMONS MAP of collectives and initiatives working in conservation, restoration, environmental education, rights of nature in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In When Species Meet, Donna Haraway writes that “all actors become who they are in the dance of relating." This first edition of EL JOURNAL seeks to unfold emergent dances of liquid ecologies by reflecting on the role of artistic and pedagogical practices in cultivating care for more-than-human water cycles. How we imagine and cultivate hydrosocial territories in Latin America and the Caribbean matters, not least because the present demands a radical shift in relationality, where the anthropocentric "hydrosocial" opens to a more-than-human "hydrocommons" engaged in the dynamic interpermations of plant, animal, terrestrial, meteorological, human, and infrastructural lives.

Against contemporary colonial-capitalist fantasies of discovering water on distant planets, Brazilian Indigenous thinker Ailton Krenak insists on the need to reclaim and invent ways of being together that ground us in a heartspace where waterbodies are kin, not objects. Responding to a recent shift in environmental aesthetics toward generative routes beyond extractive enclosure, EL JOURNAL seeks essays from artists, researchers and curators that ponder how art and education are articulating diverse actors and knowledges in hydrocommons cultures.

Applicant profile: research artists, scholars, curators, or cultural mediators with at least five years of academic career or artistic research developed in the field of water studies linked to arts and education projects.

Also, initiatives, collectives, or artistic projects with at least one year working in conservation, restoration, environmental education, and/or rights of nature from an art and education approach. These projects should be ongoing and can cover any area of Latin America and the Caribbean, and any type(s) of body of water (wetland, lakes, streams, rivers, etc.).

Those interested in conducting an interview—recorded professionally on video, as well as a text version—with a prominent figure of their choice, are welcome to apply. The proposals shall comprise the development of an in-person interview and the willingness of the interviewed figure to generate an online lecture afterward, which will be moderated by the applicant.

Applicant profile: researchers, curators, journalists, educators, scholars, artists, and/or cultural managers with experience in conducting interviews and writing texts, who have developed work related to the field of arts and education in Latin America, especially to the study of figures they consider referential.

They unfold in dynamics of co-creation led by artists in collaboration with students, institutions, and communities in public spaces throughout Latin America. The Classrooms can vary in size from 25 to 100 participants. These projects seek to approach local social, political, or environmental challenges through creative interactions with communities in their contexts. Institutions, independent organizations, and educational or cultural spaces with interest and capacity to receive a Latin American artist and collaborate in the production of an on-site Classroom in their environment may apply to become local hosts.

Applicant profile: legally constituted non-profit organizations based in Latin America, with experience in artistic residency models and/or development of educational programs, as well as an active working relationship with a specific local community.

Projects for LABORATORIES:

LA ESCUELA___’s LABORATORIES are virtual learning spaces for artistic work and experimentation around social, political, and environmental issues. They are developed online by artists in collaboration with participants from different regions of Latin America. Using digital tools for interconnection and exchange, the projects can also invite to generate simultaneous actions in each participant’s location. The topics to be addressed are open and should be related to the applicant’s artistic research, practices, or previous projects. The workshops should be conducted in Spanish or Portuguese. We recommend visiting the LABORATORIES section to learn about the nature of these formative projects.

The proposals’ approaches are open and should relate to the applicant’s research. The stay proposes a space for reflection and practice of diverse learning perspectives. The projects should contribute to creating collective educational models, on the premise of generating new spaces for social action, in dialogue with the social, political, and/or environmental challenges of the communities where these practices unfold. On this occasion, the Residency will take place in Lugar a Dudas, in Cali, Colombia.
