Elizabeth Catoia Varela

(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1981) Researcher and curator. Ph.D. in Visual Arts: History of Art and Criticism, by the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (EBA/UFRJ); her dissertation was published as a book in 2017, entitled Concrete Art Beyond Europe: Brazil, Argentina, and MAM RJ. Interested in modern and contemporary art, her main object of study is geometric abstract art during the first half of the 20th century. Working at the Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro from 2008 until 2021, she was the curator of the exhibition MAM: its History, its Heritage, and published the books Trajectory: Courses and Events MAM RJ (2016) and The Modernist Challenge: Building an Icon (2018), both devoted to the museum's history.
