Nelson Garrido

(Caracas, Venezuela, 1952) Photographer, mixed media artist, and cultural agitator. He studied photography at the workshop of artist Carlos Cruz-Diez in Paris. He is the founder of the Organización Nelson Garrido (aka La ONG), a photography school and alternative cultural space in Caracas, in which he gathers his experiences and particular methodology as a photography teacher. Since the 1980s, he has carried out a body of work in two facets: an anthropological-documentary one, which he developed along with his work at the Fundación Bigott, and another in which he has developed his own visual language based on the aesthetic and conceptual relationships between eroticism, death, and violence. With this he has stood out as a reference in Latin American photography and has earned distinctions such as the National Prize of Visual Arts of Venezuela (1991).
